Study clarifies hydroquinone’s role in ochronosis
Tyrosinase (Tyr) catalyzes hydroquinone (HQ) oxidation via two main pathways. The HBQ pathway directly oxidizes HQ to 2-hydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (HBQ), which dimerizes and forms hydroquinone-eumelanin (HQ-EM).
