Six ways a new app may help your patients with chronic urticaria

A free mobile app specifically designed to assist patients with chronic urticaria was recently released by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).

This app, called the Chronic Hives Patient App, according to the AAD, will be available for patients to use on both Android and Apple devices. Features include:

  • Info about hives.

  • Medication reminders and information.

  • A diary for symptoms and triggers.

  • A Dermatology Quality of Life Index record.

  • Help finding a doctor.

  • Patient support.

For some patients, chronic hives can come and go for months or years. Only 35% of patients are symptom-free within a year, and nearly 40% of patients whose hives last for six months still experience symptoms after 10 years.

“Dermatologists treat patients with chronic hives, so we know how frustrating this condition can be,” says New York dermatologist Dr. Mark Lebwohl, president of the AAD, who was quoted in an AAD press release. “By launching an app designed specifically for these patients, we hope we can help them improve their quality of life.”

Eventually, dermatologists, allergists/immunologists, and primary care providers will also have a mobile-friendly Web app that will assist them in diagnosing and treating chronic urticaria. Highlights of the app include:

  • Diagnostic guides to help you differentiate the condition.

  • Considerations for evaluation and testing.

  • Recommended therapies and a detailed step-care treatment approach.

  • A reimbursement algorithm feature that includes ICD-10 coding.

The Chronic Hives Patient App was developed with a grant from Novartis. To learn more, visit www.aad.org/CUapp.
