“We know repeated exposure to the sun can age white skin, but very little research has been carried out on black people,” said lead researcher Dr. Abigail Langton from The University of Manchester.
“This research shows that black skin is indeed affected by the sun, though it takes far longer for that effect to be felt.”
Per-capita expenditures also varied by ethnicity, with white patients spending approximately three times what black or Hispanic patients spent (US$210 vs. US$63 or US$73, respectively). These ethnic disparities in expenditure persisted after the researchers controlled for controlled for education level, income, insurance status and sex.
"Our study found there are significant differences in the skin of people with AD than in those without the condition. Furthermore, we found African Americans with AD have more inflammation than European Americans with the condition," said Dr. Emma Guttman-Yassky.
Study authors note the paper represents some of the first published reliable information from a racially diverse population about who likely develops this chronic condition, which is characterized by intensely itchy nodules that develop on the arms and legs that can generalize throughout the body.
