The investigators hypothesized that higher levels of interferons in lupus patients, particularly in their keratinocytes, explains why up to 60% of lupus patients experience sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) light or photosensitivity.
"We think this device could be easily adapted to monitor ulcers remotely using cameras,” said lead author Dr. Michael Hughes. “They could also be programmed to recognize different parts of the body so that the treatment is given accurately.”
A study presented at the British Association of Dermatologists’ Annual Meeting in Edinburgh outlined three major failings of smartphone apps used to diagnose skin cancer. Flaws in the technology used to analyze photos, lack of input during the app development phase from specialists, and lack of extensive published trials proving safety and efficacy, are the major drawbacks that researchers observed.
Anti-IL-15 treatment resulted in reversal of depigmentation in mice. In particular, short-term treatment inhibited the TRMs ability to produce interferon-gamma, and long-term treatment depleted the TRM from the skin lesions. Overall, short-term anti-IL-15 treatment provided durable repigmentation when administered systemically or locally in the skin of the mice.
First, two doses of the 9-valent HPV vaccine were administered into the patient’s arm, six weeks apart. A few weeks later, Dr. Nichols directly injected several, but not all, of the patient’s tumours. The direct injections were given four times over a span of 11 months.
New research has identified the specific sequence of genetic changes that cause benign moles to become malignant skin cancer, and researchers have replicated each step in vitro using CRISPR gene editing. This research has revealed molecular warning signs which could help physicians identify developing cancers earlier, or lead to new targeted therapies
The researchers analyzed health records in a longitudinal cohort of over 130,000 patients in the CHOP pediatric network. The patients were followed from birth to adolescence, to determine whether and when patients acquired allergic diseases. The researchers also compared the risk of developing EoE between allergic and non-allergic children.
"Although moisturizer with SPF does provide sun protection, our research suggests that it's not on the same level as sunscreen," said Dr. Austin McCormick. "We would not recommend it as a like-for-like replacement for your sun protection needs."
“We were quite surprised when we saw just how distinct we humans are from almost all other mammals, at least in terms of the skin microbes that we can collect with a swab,” said senior author Josh Neufeld, PhD, biology professor at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ont.
